New Caledonia Considering Annual June 26 Public Holiday

The new president of New Caledonia, Philippe Gomes, of the Caledonia Together Party, has indicated that he would consult leaders over whether to make June the 26th a public holiday next year.

June 26, 2008, had been declared a one-off public holiday to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the 1988 Matignon agreements (05-Jun-2008), but, earlier this year, the Government of New Caledonia had confirmed that June 26 would not be a public holiday in 2009 (02-Jun-2009).

President Gomes indicated that in compensation for the declaration of June 26 as an annual public holiday, the September 24 public holiday would probably be cancelled (September 24th is the day, in 1853, when New Caledonia became a French possession).
