Pakistan's Federal Interior Ministry has announced the dates of the upcoming public holidays for Eid-ul-Fitr (End of Ramadan) as from Sunday, September 20, to Tuesday, September 22, 2009.
Ministry officials have said that the three-day Eid public holiday schedule, from September 20 to 22, which had been announced at the end of last year (31-Dec-2008), was now definite but that the Prime Minister could still declare a 4th public holiday, on Wednesday, September 23, 2009, in the event that the Eid is declared on Tuesday the 22nd of September.
Although Pakistan has a tradition of declaring its religious public holidays later than most other countries, and with sightings that often defy the most basic tenets of astronomy, it would be surprising if the Eid ul-Fitr was declared for Tuesday, September 22.
The new Moon will occur, in Islamabad, on Friday night, September 18, and on Sunday, September 20, at the time of Moonset, the Sun will already have set for 30 minutes, while the Moon will be more than 40 hours old, meaning that the crescent of the Moon should be visible on Sunday night, September 20, making the 21st the day of the Eid ul-Fitr.
