Pakistan Considering 4-Day Public Holidays

(Posted on Saturday, December 19, 2009)

The government of Pakistan has announced that it was considering linking this year's December 25 public holiday with the upcoming Ashura public holiday on December 28, 2009, to create a 4-day period of public sector holidays.

Note that December 25 is a non-working public holiday in Pakistan, not by virtue of that date being Christmas Day, but as an observance of Quaid e Azam's birthday.

Note that, since the end of last year (17-Dec-2008), Pakistan's Province of Sindh also observes December 27 as an annual non-working public holiday to mark the anniversary of the death of Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairwoman Benazir Bhutto.

The date was also observed as a nationwide public holiday in 2008 (13-Nov-2008), and a 3-day banking and public sector holiday was declared in 2007, following Benazir Bhutto's assasination (28-Dec-2007).
