Peru's President, Alan García, has announced that a decree will be signed this week to abolish the system of civil service bridge public holidays, instituted a few years ago.
The Decreto de Urgencia Nº 099-2009 actually goes further and cancels all public service closings except for January 1st, May 1st, July 28-29, and December 25.
A first attempt at an annual declaration of a series of civil service bridge public holidays was made in 2003 (28-Feb-2003), to replace the piecemeal declaration of civil service bridge public holidays that occurred in the previous years (28-Nov-2002 and 19-Oct-2001).
But, the practice of individual, last-minute announcement was continued in 2004 and 2005 (26-Aug-2005 and 29-Dec-2005), before the annual declaration of civil service bridge public holidays was finally enshrined as a yearly exercise, until this year (22-Aug-2006, 15-Sep-2006, 20-Sep-2007, 08-Feb-2008, and 15-Dec-2008).
Note that the announced decree envisages that, through reorganization of working shifts, the public service remain open every day of the year, including Saturdays and Sundays, with the exception of 4 annual public holidays; January 1st, May 1st, December 1st, and December 25th.
