Philippines' President, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo (PGMA), has declared Friday-Saturday, November 27-28, 2009, as nationwide non-working public holidays to mark the celebration of the Eid'l Adha (Feast of Sacrifice).
In past years, the Eid'l Adha (Feast of Sacrifice) was only celebrated as a regional public holiday in the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM), and only for one day, instead of two.
Interestingly enough, it is reported that President Arroyo made the declaration after consulting with the Saudi Arabian embassy, represented by Ambassador Mohammad Ameen Wali, which may explain the choice of a date for the Feast of Sacrifice that is based on the Saudi Umm al Qura calendar, rather than the Muslim calendar traditionally used in the Philippines (and whose dates, like those of India and Pakistan, are usually one day after the Saudi ones).
Whether this 2-day nationwide celebration remains in force in future years remains to be seen, but we would expect it to be the case, as long as Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo remains president of the Philippines.
