Pursuant to Presidential Decree No. 1083 which recognized Muslim holidays, Philippines' ARMM Governor, Datu Zaldy Uy Ampatuan, has declared a non-working public holiday on Monday, July 20, 2009, in celebration of Lailatul Izra Wal Miraj (the Ascension of Prophet Muhammad to Heaven).
The ARMM (Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao) comprises five provinces and one city: the provinces of Basilan, Lanao del Sur, Maguindanao, Sulu and Tawi-Tawi and the city of Marawi.
This regional observance is not to be confused with the declaration by Philippines' President, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo (PGMA), of nationwide non-working public holidays to mark the celebration of the Eid'l Adha (Feast of Sacrifice), on Friday-Saturday, November 27-28, 2009 (05-Apr-2009).
As we reported at that time, President Arroyo made the declaration of the November 27-28, 2009, nationwide public holidays, after consulting with the Saudi Arabian embassy, which explains, once again, the choice of a date for the Lailatul Izra Wal Miraj that is based on the Saudi Umm al Qura calendar, rather than the Muslim calendar traditionally used in the Philippines (whose dates, like those of India and Pakistan, are usually one day after the Saudi ones).
