Earlier today, Philippines President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo ordered the drafting of an executive order for a massive clean-up public holiday in Metro Manila, following the recent torrential rains.
Philippines Environment Secretary, Lito Atienza, has also suggested during the President's briefing that Malacañang ask metro mayors, in other cities than Manila, to exercise their power to "declare a [public] holiday for a massive sanitation and clean-up day".
Defense Secretary, Gilbert Teodoro, said in a press conference that the massive clean-up day will be declared a special non-working public holiday and, although Malacañang has yet to set a date, Secretary Teodoro suggested that it may be scheduled within the current week.
In related news, the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) announced this morning that classes at the tertiary level will remain suspended until Saturday, in Metro Manila and other areas placed under a state of calamity (National Capital Region, Southern Tagalog Region (Regions 4A & B) and parts of Central Luzon).
In a later announcement, Philippines Education Secretary, Jesli Lapus, announced that all pre-school, elementary and high school classes would also remain suspended until Saturday, in Metro Manila, the whole of Cavite province, Cainta town in Rizal and Sta. Rosa in Laguna.
