Poland Considering August 1st National Holiday

(Posted on Friday, July 31, 2009)

Source: Polskie Radio (Warsaw)

Following Poland's President, Lech Kaczynski's initiative, a draft bill proclaiming August 1st a national holiday has already been forwarded to the Sejm (Poland's lower house of parliament) to coincide with the 65th anniversary of the 1944 Warsaw Uprising.

Polish President Lech Kaczynski is quoted as saying that "I cannot imagine the bill will not to be passed", and according to pollster Gfk Polonia, 72 percent of Poles support the idea with 21 percent opposing it.

In any event, as the draft law currently stands, the date would not become a non-working public holiday, as would be the case for other bills currently being considered (see, for example, 19-Apr-2009, and to a lesser extent, 07-Apr-2009).
