The Vice-President of Puerto Rico's House of Representatives, Gabriel Rodríguez Aguiló, has introduced a bill, Proyecto de la Cámara 1387, which would reduce the number of public sector holidays in Puerto Rico, from the current 19 to 15.
Under the proposed legislation, the public sector holidays commemorating the birth anniversaries of 4 of Puerto Rico's past statesmen, would be cancelled and be observed as part of the Presidents' Day public sector holiday (third Monday in February).
The 4 anniversaries concerned would be those of: Eugenio María de Hostos (variable date in January), José de Diego (variable date in April), Luis Muñoz Rivera (variable date in July) and José Celso Barbosa (annually on July 27).
Note that the recent tradition of declaring Black Friday as a public sector bridge holiday (24-Nov-2008) is not addressed by the proposed legislation.
