Russia's Vice-Chief of the Labor Authority, Ivan Schklowez, has announced that he was "90% certain" that the Russian government would soon issue a decree declaring the first 10 days of January 2010 as non-working public holidays, with the first working day of 2010 being Monday, January 11, 2010.
This declaration, were it to be officially confirmed, would be in line with the 2004 amendments to Article 112 of Russia's Labour Code, which extended the New Year public holidays from 2 to 5 working days (30-Dec-2004).
The early January public holidays amendments have, however, come under much criticism in recent years, with numerous bills proposing to increase the May public holidays, while reducing the Western New Year public holidays (22-Apr-2009 and 16-Nov-2008).
