Spain Regional Public Holiday Under Fire

(Posted on Sunday, September 20, 2009)

The main opposition party of Spain's autonomous region of Melilla is campaigning to have the, September 17, Melilla Foundation Day public holiday abolished, or at least moved to another date.

According to the President of the CpM, Aberchán Mustafa, there is nothing sacred about the September 17, Melilla Foundation Day, public holiday, as it was instituted quite recently (in 1991).

As an alternative to September 17, the CpM is proposing either March 13th, the date on which was approved Melilla's Statute of Autonomy, or November 6th, the day on which the King of Spain visited the city.

This new public holiday drive by the mostly Muslim CpM party, follows their recent success in having the Eid al-Adha (Feast of Sacrifice) declared an official public holiday, beginning in 2010, in Spain's autonomous region of Melilla (22-Aug-2009).
