Swaziland Announces Date Of Incwala Main Day

(Posted on Thursday, December 31, 2009)

Source: The Swazi Observer (Mbabane)

Swaziland's Home Affairs Minister, Chief Mgwagwa Gamadze, has announced that the the main day of the upcoming Incwala would on Sunday, January 3rd, 2010.

In a follow-up interview, Chief Gamadze could neither confirm nor deny that Monday, January 4, 2010, would be declared a public holiday, pointing out that "only the king, of course in consultation with the various councils (emabandla) had the powers to declare the Incwala holiday", before going on to say that "it follows [however] that if the main Incwala is on Sunday then Monday will be declared a public holiday".

We have therefore removed the "tentative" label attached to the January 4th, 2010, Incwala Public Holiday, and we fully expect that date to soon be declared a non-working public holiday.

As was the case in previous years (13-Dec-2008, 26-Dec-2007, and 04-Jan-2007) most businesses and government services will not be operating on the date of the Incwala public holiday, apart from those considered to be essential services.

The preceeding Little Incwala (not a public holiday) began in the middle of this month (16-Dec-2009).
