Taiwan To Consider Cancelling 228 Public Holiday

(Posted on Wednesday, February 18, 2009)

Yesterday, Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Legislator Wu Yu-sheng said he planned to propose that the government cancel the February 28 public holiday (aka. 228 Memorial Day) as an official public holiday.

Under this proposal, February 28 would remain a national memorial day, but people would not be granted a day off. The discussion on the future of the 228 public holiday has been coming to the fore on and off for the last 10 years (24-Feb-2001).

Wu also suggested that the government abolish the remembrance day status of the March 14 Anti-Aggression Day, the July 15 Lifting of Martial Law Memorial Day and the October 24 Taiwan UN Day.

On the other hand, he proposed turning Children’s Day into Parents and Children’s Day and granting people holidays on that day in addition to December 25 Constitution Day.
