Speaking in the legislature, yesterday, Taiwan's Premier, Wu Den-yih, announced that he would ask Taiwan's interior ministry whether Matsu's birthday should be made a national holiday.
Matsu is known as the guardian of fishermen and sailors and is the most popular folk deity in Taiwan with thousands of temples in her honor. Matsu's birthday occurs annually on the 23rd day of the third month on the lunar calendar (ie. on May 6 in 2010, and April 25 in 2011).
The working, or non-working, status of this possible new national holiday is yet to be discussed, but we would hazard a guess that it would be a working holiday, as there are already proposals that the government cancel the February 28 public holiday (aka. 228 Memorial Day) as an official public holiday (18-Feb-2009), particularly with this year's addition of bridge public holidays (10-Feb-2009).
