Thailand's Prime Minister, Abhisit Vejjajiva, has announced that the government would consider longer public holidays, as part of its efforts to stimulate local tourism.
Earlier this year, Thailand instituted the principle of bridge public holidays for the public sector, whereby Tuesday or Thursday public sector holidays would be linked to the adjoining weekend by declaring the Monday or Friday a bridge public holiday (18-Feb-2009).
More recently, the Governing Cabinet declared the extension of the usual 3-day Songkran public holidays for 2 additional days; Thursday and Friday, April 16 and 17, 2009 (14-Apr-2009).
The one likely immediate possible addtional public holiday that could be declared is the temporary restoration of the Buddhist Lent public holiday which was replaced by the Asarnha Bucha Day a few years ago (16-Nov-2006). This would create a 5-day public holiday next month, from July 4 to July 8.
