Thailand Declares July 8 Public Sector Holiday

(Posted on Friday, July 3, 2009)

The Thai Cabinet has extended the upcoming Asarnha Bucha long weekend for Government workers by declaring an additional public sector holiday on Wednesday, July 8, 2009.

Locally, though, there is widespread confusion about who get which holidays next week.

Though the best-known holiday next week is the Buddhist Lent, this holiday was replaced as a public holiday, beginning in 2007 (B.E. 2550), by the holiday that always occurs a day before, Asarnha Bucha (16-Nov-2006).

Last February the Thai Cabinet approved the declaration of Monday, July 6, 2009, as a one-off bridge public holiday (18-Feb-2009), and last month Thailand's Prime Minister, Abhisit Vejjajiva, announced that the government would consider longer public holidays, as part of its efforts to stimulate local tourism, leading us to speculate that July 8, 2009, would be declared a one-off public holiday (21-Jun-2009).
