UK Considering New Public Holiday

Yvette Cooper, the United Kingdom's Work and Pensions Secretary, has proposed adding a new annual bank holiday to commemorate people who are killed at work.

Workers' Memorial Day is already marked around the globe on April 28, and one proposal would be to have the new UK bank holiday on the Saturday nearest to April 28., But Secretary Cooper has said that she would also listen to calls to create another Bank Holiday.

The proposal, announced today, has so far been met with a lot of scepticism, as many such proposals, made in recent years, came to nought (see for example: 05-Apr-2009, 15-Jan-2009, 28-Oct-2008, 26-Jun-2008, 11-Jan-2008, 25-Jul-2007, and 27-Jun-2007).

The last time that the UK declared an additional public holiday (or "bank holiday" as they are called in the UK) was to commemorate the Queen's 2002 Golden Jubilee (19-Jun-2001).
