Ukraine's Central Bank, the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU), has declared January 1-3 and January 7-10, 2010, as periods of bank holidays.
As per the NBU communique, on the aforementioned dates, the NBU electronic payment system, the electronic mail system and the system of approval of agreements on the interbank currency market of the Ukraine will not operate.
The extra non-working bank holiday of Friday, January 8, 2010, will be compensated by Ukranian banks being exceptionally open on Saturday, March 13, 2010. In addition, on January 4, 2010, the banks will function, but will not be open to the public, and on that date the interbank clearing system will not be operational.
Recall that, late last month (27-Nov-2009), the Cabinet of Ministers of the Ukraine had declared Monday, January 4, Tuesday, January 5, Wednesday, January 6, and Friday, January 8, 2010, as non-working public holidays, thus creating a continuous period of public holidays from January 1 to January 10, 2010.
However, as per custom (20-Dec-2008), last month's announcement applies to all enterprises, institutions and organizations, apart from the Pension Fund, Ukrposhta, the State Treasury and banks. Today's announcement thus clarifies the early-January 2010 non-working holidays situation for banks.
