The few American states that currently give more than the nationwide average of 11 paid public sector holidays are considering reducing the number of state public holidays.

California's governor, Arnold Schwarzenegger, is considering eliminating the public sector holidays for Lincoln Birthday and Columbus Day, while New Jersey has passed a bill in September 2009 that included eliminating Lincoln's Birthday as a state public sector holiday, and Utah has eliminated Columbus Day as a paid public sector holiday.
