Afghanistan Declares July 19-20 Public Holidays

(Posted on Sunday, July 18, 2010)

The government of Afghanistan has declared a 2-day public holiday for Monday and Tuesday, July 19 and 20, 2010, on the occasion of next week's international conference.

The conference, billed as a bid by the Afghan government to start a process of transition from dependence on Western backers to running the country alone and responsibly, follows last month's 2-day public holidays on account of the peace jirga (01-Jun-2010).

The conference is to be co-chaired by UN chief Ban Ki-moon and to be attended by up to 70 international representatives including about 40 foreign ministers, led by US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton.
