Australian NT Announces April 26 Public Holiday

(Posted on Tuesday, August 31, 2010)

The Minister for Public Employment of Australia's Northern Territory, Chris Burns, has announced that a public holiday would be held on Tuesday, April 26, 2011.

This announcement is due to the fact that Anzac Day falls on Easter Monday for the first time ever, and is in line with last year's CAF Agreement (15-Jan-2009), which set out to harmonize the treatment of the ANZAC Day public holiday, across all Australian states and territories, when ANZAC Day falls on a Sunday, or another public holiday.

Recently, the ACT (14-Jul-2010), Western Australia (01-Jul-2010) and Southern Australia (08-Jul-2010) also declared April 26, 2011, as a public holiday. All other Australian states are expected to follow suit, even Tasmania, which did not follow the CAF guidelines in 2010 (18-Apr-2009), but which will, de facto, in 2011 as Easter Tuesday is a State public holiday in Tasmania.
