Bahrain Revises Prophet's Birthday Public Holiday Date

(Posted on Sunday, February 21, 2010)

Bahrain's Prime Minister, Prince Khalifa bin Salman Al Khalifa, has issued an official circular specifying the date, and compensatory day-off, of the upcoming Prophet Mohammed's Birthday public holiday in Bahrain.

Contrary to Bahrain Central Bank's list of expected 2010 bank and public holidays, published last June (22-Jun-2009), the prime minister's circular declares Friday, February 26th, 2010, as the date of the upcoming Prophet Mohammed's Birthday public holiday in Bahrain.

In addition, as Fridays are one of the weekly days of rest in Bahrain (02-Aug-2006), the circular specifies that an additional, day in lieu, public holiday will be observed on Sunday, February 28, 2010.

In principle, the announcement only covers the public sector ("government ministries, bodies and establishments"), but recent legislation (still to be officially gazetted) would make one think that this day in lieu public holiday will probably also apply to the private sector (14-Mar-2009).
