Bhutan SAARC Public Holidays Update

(Posted on Tuesday, March 30, 2010)

The police chief of Bhutan's capital, Thimphu, brigadier Kipchu Namgyal, has said that discussions were going on within the government to declare a school holiday during days of the upcoming SAARC summit.

The 16th South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC) Summit will be held in the Bhutanese capital, Thimphu, April 28-29, 2010, and, as we surmised when the first tentative announcement was made (21-May-2009), we expect at least one of these dates to be declared as public holiday (30-Aug-2009).

This was the case last year in Sri Lanka (16-Jul-2008) and Bhutan has often done so in the past to coincide with major events (04-Nov-2008).

In any case, traffic in Thimphu is likely to be severely perturbed during the summit, as the royal Bhutan police will be introducing a traffic system, whereby only odd or even number vehicles will be allowed to ply in Thimphu on alternate days during the summit week.

In addition, the government of Bhutan wants tour operators to vacate hotel rooms in Thimphu and move all tourists guests to Paro or Punakha, all the while restricting tourist movement in the capital.
