Bolivia's Minister of the Presidency, Óscar Coca, has officially announced that the cabinet had decided to maintain all traditional Catholic public holidays.
The minister was speaking on the occasion of the official signing of Presidential Decree 0411, instituting a new, January 22, annual public holiday called "Inicio del Estado Plurinacional" (20-Jan-2010).
The issue has been the subject of much speculation since the passage of the new Constitución Política del Estado (CPE) which pointedly stated that Bolivia would henceforth be a lay country ("país laico").
Following the passage of the CPE, the Head of the Department of Labour for the Department of Oruro, Juan Carlos Rodríguez, had announced that the implementation of the recently approved new constitution (CPE) would probably mean that all the religious public holidays of Bolivia would be replaced by non-religious ones, over the next year or so, but that for 2009, they were likely to remain as previously announced (08-Apr-2009).
Since then, no religious public holidays have been cancelled, but on each occasion, the goverment had to specifically declare the holiday on a one-off basis (09-Jun-2009).

Bolivia Officially Maintains Catholic Public Holidays
