The Committee on Education and Culture (SCC) of Brazil's Chamber of Deputies, has sent back, without comment, the Projeto de Lei 5701/09, of deputy Marcos Antonio (PRB-PE), which would declare the March 8, Dia da Mulher (International women's Day), as an annual national public holiday in Brazil.
The aforementioned bill, although not rejected, is unlikely to make it into law anytime soon, as the new annual national public holiday expected in Brazil, is the November 20th, Dia da Consciência Negra, which Brazil's president, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, has promised would be a full-fledged national public holiday, starting in 2010 (22-Nov-2009).
Note that public holidays legislation, such as the March 8 one, are common and often never get rejected. They simply gather dust and are forgotten until a new, similar bill is concurrently presented (26-May-2008).
