(Posted on Friday, February 26, 2010)

The president of the Republic of The Gambia, Sheikh Professor Alhaji Dr Yahya Jammeh, has declared Saturday, February 27th, 2010, as a public holiday throughout The Gambia on account of this year's Prophet's Birthday.

The Prophet's Birthday, locally called either Mawlud Nabi, the name imported from the Arabic peninsula, or Gamo, the name in local African languages, will actually be observed today, Friday, February 26, 2010, as a religious holiday.

Last year (01-Sep-2009), Gambia's President, Yaya Jammeh, and the Gambian Supreme Islamic Council (SIC), jointly announced that from now on the dates of Muslim public holidays would be calculated in line with the Umm al-Qura calendar used by Saudi Arabia.
