Hong Kong's Chief Executive, Donald Tsang, has announced that he would discuss the need for a review of days-in-lieu for public holidays, with Labour and Welfare Secretary, Matthew Cheung.
The announcement was made following complaints that the current days in lieu system, made many worker who do not usually work on Saturdays, lose a day off during this year's Lunar New Year public holidays. Under current legislation, when the Lunar New Year falls on a Sunday (as it did this year), the annual 3-day public holiday runs from Saturday to Tuesday, rather than Sunday to Wednesday.
The last change to Hong Kong's annual public holidays was made in 1999 (21-May-1999), but additional day in lieu public holidays have been declared in the past when Easter and Ching Ming coincided (13-May-1998 and 25-Apr-2009).
