The States of Jersey (Jersey's Parliament) has voted against a recent bill that would have declared Monday, May 10, 2010, as a day in lieu public holiday, to compensate the fact that the 60th Liberation Day anniversary falls on a Sunday.
Late last year (20-Dec-2009), Jersey's Chief Minister, Senator Terry Le Sueur, had introduced legislation that would have made Monday, May 10, 2010, a one-off day in lieu public holiday, in a move akin to that of 2009, when the Liberation Day public holiday also fell on a weekend, and when Jersey government and public sector workers were afforded a day in lieu public sector holiday on Monday, May 11, 2009 (17-Feb-2009).
The proposal, rejected by States Members by 27 votes to 22, had the backing of the States Employment Board and the Council of Ministers.
Confronted with the same calendar issue, and the same public holiday, neighboring Guernsey has for its part officially declared the day after this year's Liberation Day public holiday, an additional official public holiday (14-Oct-2009 and 11-Sep-2009).
