Jersey Legislature To Consider May 7 Public Holiday

Jersey Deputy, M. Tadier, of St. Brelade, has introduced new legislation that would declare Friday, May 7, 2010, a one-off day in lieu public holiday, to compensate the fact that this year's Liberation Day public holiday falls on a Sunday.

Late last year (20-Dec-2009) a similar bill was introduced by Jersey's Chief Minister, Senator Terry Le Sueur, which would have made Monday, May 10, 2010, a one-off day in lieu public holiday, to compensate the fact that next year's Liberation Day public holiday falls on a Sunday.

But, to most observers' surprise, this bill was recently rejected by States Members by 27 votes to 22, although it had had the backing of the States Employment Board and the Council of Ministers (03-Feb-2010).

Neighboring Guernsey has for its part officially declared the day after this year's Liberation Day public holiday, an additional official public holiday (14-Oct-2009 and 11-Sep-2009).
