The Chairman of Kenya's Interim Independent Electoral Commission, Ahmed Isaack Hassan, has announced that the date for the upcoming Constitutional Referendum was set for August 4, 2010.
The draft constitution (21-Nov-2009) would allow for Parliament to make provisions for additional public holidays, through legislation, and seems set on cancelling the, October 10, Moi Day public holiday, as well as keeping only three constitutional public holidays, namely; Madaraka Day (June 1), Mashujaa Day (currently called Kenyatta Day) on October 20, and Jamhuri Day (December 12).
Although last summer, President, Mwai Kibaki, had declared Tuesday, August 25, 2009, as a, one-off, census public holiday (23-Aug-2009), a recent call by Chairman Hassan to have the government of Kenya declare Friday, April 30, 2010, as a one-off public holiday to allow people to enable Kenyans register as voters (27-Apr-2010) was turned down.
However in the case of the aforementioned actual date of the referendum, we expect Chairman Hassan to call for a one-off public holiday, and for the request to be heeded.
