Kenyan August 4 Public Holiday Update

(Posted on Wednesday, July 28, 2010)

Source: Interim Independent Electoral Commision (Republic of Kenya)

The Chairman of Kenya's Interim Independent Electoral Commission, Ahmed Isaack Hassan, has asked Kenyan President, Mwai Kibaki, to declare Wednesday, August 4, 2010, the date of the upcoming constitutional referendum date, a public holiday.

This request is as we surmised, when the date for the upcoming Constitutional Referendum was announced, last spring (14-May-2010).

Although a recent call by Chairman Hassan to have the government of Kenya declare Friday, April 30, 2010, as a one-off public holiday to allow people to enable Kenyans register as voters (27-Apr-2010) was turned down, we expect the present request to be heeded.

The draft constitution (21-Nov-2009) would allow for Parliament to make provisions for additional public holidays, through legislation, and seems set on cancelling the, October 10, Moi Day public holiday, as well as keeping only three constitutional public holidays, namely; Madaraka Day (June 1), Mashujaa Day (currently called Kenyatta Day) on October 20, and Jamhuri Day (December 12).
