Following yesterday’s cabinet session, Lebanon's Information Minister, Tarek Mitri, announced that the Lebanese cabinet had agreed to make the Feast of the Annunciation a new annual national public holiday (la fête sera chômée).
The declaration had been expected ever since last year's first, working day, observance of the "Islamic-Christian Day" or as it was officially named, "Together around Mary, Our Lady" (24-Mar-2009).
The annunciation will fall on March 25 in 2010, but is often observed on a different date if it conflicts with the holy week or the week after Easter.
In the case of Lebanon, as this is meant to be an interdenominational public holiday, it is not clear if the public holiday's date will be made to depend on the date of the Christian feast of Easter, and even if it does, will it depend on the date of the Catholic or Orthodox Easter, both of which are public holidays in Lebanon. In any case, the issue of observing this new public holiday on a date other than March 25 will not arise until 2012.
