Lithuanian Prime Minister, Andrius Kubilius, has indicated that he would block the adoption of Christmas Eve as a new public holiday, unless people were ready to cancel another of the current Lithuanian public holidays.
The Prime Minister was reacting to last week's adoption, in first reading, of last month's bill (16-Oct-2010) by Lithuania's Social Democratic Party, and supported by Seimas Speaker Irena Degutiene, to declare December 24, Christmas Eve, an annual non-working public holiday.
The Prime Minister did, however, state that his government had approved the principle of cancelling the recently-reintroduced (26-Apr-2001) May 1st public holiday in exchange for a new annual December 24 public holiday in Lithuania.
Recall that since the end of 2009, public holidays falling on a weekend no longer give rise to a day in lieu public holiday (09-Jan-2009).
