Malaysia Could Extend Deepavali Public Holiday

(Posted on Sunday, July 11, 2010)

Source: Bernama News Agency (Kuala Lumpur)

One of Malaysia's MIC (Malaysian Indian Congress) has asked the Malaysian government to extend the duration of the Deepavali public holiday for 2 days.

Currently, the Muslim and Chinese public holidays of Aidil Fitri and Chinese New Year, are observed over a 2-day public holidays period.

One advantage of a 2-day Deepavali public holiday would be to cover the date of the Diwali holiday, observed by Northern Indians (a very small minority of Indians in Malaysia), and which occurs the day after Deepavali in about half the years.
