Malta's Department of Information has published its official list of public holidays for the calendar year 2011.
The announcement, made much earlier than usual (25-Sep-2009), seems to have been made to quash any rumours about day in lieu public holidays in 2011, as 4 of the official 2011 public holidays will fall on a weekend (2 on a Saturday and 2 on a Sunday).
As per the 2005 amendments to the National Holidays and Other Public Holidays Act (Chapter 252 of the Laws of Malta) (15-Jan-2005), public holidays that fall on a weekend no longer are compensated ("with effect from 1st January, 2005 when a National Holiday or a Public Holiday listed in the Schedule falls on a Saturday or on a Sunday, it shall not be deemed to be a public holiday for the purposes of entitling any person to an additional day of vacation leave").
Late in 2007, Malta's Labour Party had promised that, if elected, public holidays that fall on a weekend would give rise to a day in lieu on the following scheduled working day (16-Dec-2007), while the current Finance Minister, Tonio Fenech, had re-iterated its position that there would be no return to the policy of days in lieu (21-Oct-2007).
The MLP lost the March 9, 2008, general elections (08-Mar-2008) and a 2007 complaint by Malta's General Workers' Union (GWU) in front of the ILO (International Labour Organization) eventually got nowhere (27-Jan-2007 and 20-Sep-2005).
