The Nepalese government is being pressed by the Tamang community to declare a 5-day public holiday to celebrate "Taak" Lhosar (Tiger New Year 2846).
The Nepalese government had already agreed to declare the first day of the traditional 4-day festival as a public holiday, as that date conveniently falls on the Saturday weekly day of rest in Nepal (Saturday, January 16, in 2010), but is unlikely to extend this to the requested 5-day period.
The 5th day of public holidays being requested (for a 4-day festival) is necessary, according to Nepal National Tamang Federation general secretary, Shyam Tamang, because "the festivities have a fusion of dance, colour, music and feast" and therefore "we get tired from religious and cultural programmes of four days".
Note that Nepal celebrates more than one Lhosar public holiday (Lhosar meaning New Year) as Nepal's various ethnic communities observe their New Year at different times of the year (29-Dec-2009, 24-Feb-2009, 07-Mar-2008, and 18-Feb-2007).
