Nepal Extends Sonam Lhosar Public Holiday

The government of Nepal has declared tomorrow, Sunday, February 14, 2010, as a nationwide public holiday on the occasion of the Lhosar festival of the Sherpas, Gurungs and Tibetan communities.

Usually, the 2 February Lhosar holidays (Gyalbo Lhosar observed by religious groups and business and Sonam Lhosar celebrated mainly in rural and farming communities) are public holidays only in some regions and for some communities of Nepal.

The extension of the observance of previously-regional public holidays to a nationwide status is part of a recent trend which saw the other Lhosar public holidays (Tamang 05-Jan-2010 and Tamu 29-Dec-2009) afforded nationwide status.

Note, that the day after, February 15, 2010, will not be a public holiday, as Nepal's Home Ministry has recently issued a communique (11-Feb-2010) stating that the date of Nepalese President Ram Baran Yadav's departure on and return from, an upcoming state visit to India, would not be public holidays, as previous custom would normally have had it.
