A majority of the parties in the Dutch Parliament has responded favorably to the Dutch Labour (PvdA) leader, Job Cohen, proposing that May 5th should become a general public holiday every year.
Currently May 5th is only a general public holiday in the Netherlands every 5 years (2010, 2015, 2020, ...). On other years, the status of the holidays depends on sectorial collective bargaining agreements, with the public sector and many large companies generally having the day off.
A similar proposal in 2007 was rejected due to lack of support by the PvdA. But now, with support from the PvdA, the Party for Freedom (PVV), the Socialist Party (SP), and the left wing Greens (GroenLinks), it is possible that the change may be effective starting in 2011.
