The leader of the Government of the Netherlands Antilles, Commissioner William Marlin, has been quoted as saying that, with more autonomy after October 10th, St. Maarten will be able to make its own decisions, such as declaring Emancipation Day, on July 1, as a national public holiday ("By the grace of God, July 1, 2011, will be a public holiday in the new country St. Maarten").
If this new public holiday were to become reality, it is unsure what would happen to the recently added, Kingdom Day public holiday(09-May-2008) which took effect in 2008. At the time, to compensate for this new public holiday , Antilles' Day (October 21) had been cancelled.
