Oman Declares July 10 Public Holiday

(Posted on Monday, July 5, 2010)

Oman's Minister of the Diwan of Royal Court and Chairman of the Civil Service Council, Sayyid Ali bin Hamoud al Busaidi, has announced that Saturday, July 10, 2010, had been declared a day in lieu public holiday for employees at ministries, public authorities, and other departments of the State's administrative apparatus on the occasion of Al Isra'a Wal Miraj.

In a separate announcement, Oman's Manpower Minister, Sheikh Abdullah bin Nasser al Bakri, announced that Saturday, July 10, 2010, had also been declared a day in lieu public holiday for employees in private sector establishments.

The actual Isra and Miraj public holiday falls on Friday, July 9, 2010, but this day in lieu public holiday was declared because Fridays are still part of the Omani weekend, despite earlier attempts to change this (22-May-2007).

Note that neighboring Kuwait also declared a day in lieu public holiday for Al Isra'a Wal Miraj (29-Jun-2010), but that, due to differences in the weekends between Oman and Kuwait, the day in lieu public holiday in Kuwait was declared for Sunday, July 11, 2010.
