The Paraguayan Chamber of Deputies has passed a resolution exhorting the President of Paraguay to use Law 1723 to move mid-week public holidays to the following Monday.
The law 1723/01 (Que Autoriza Al Poder Ejecutivo A Trasladar Los Feriados Nacionales Al Dia Lunes) was passed a decade ago (29-Jun-2001) and gives the President the authority to move certain mid-week public holidays to a nearby Monday.
The law stipulates that any such executive change should be announced at least 6 months in advance, and that the following public holidays are to remain always fixed: New Year, Independence Day, día de La Virgen de Caacupé, and Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.
Despite regular calls for the executive to avail itself of that prerogative (26-Jul-2008), the provisions of that law have rarely been used.
