Philippines Rules-Out SONA Public Holiday

Philippines' Presidential spokesperson, Edwin Lacierda, has announced that the upcoming, July 26, SONA (State of the Nation Address) of recently-elected President Benigno Aquino III would not be a public holiday, but rather a regular working day.

Presidential spokesperson Lacierda did add that the government would leave it to local officials, if they wanted to declare Monday, July 26, 2010, a special non-working day.

Last year (07-Jul-2009), the date chosen by President, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo for her last SONA, July 27, 2009, was declared a special working holiday. However, the reason for this was due to the coincidental occurrence of the "Iglesia ni Cristo Day" as per Republic Act 9645, signed into law by the President on June 12, 2009.

In previous years, though, the date of the SONA was often declared a public holiday (22-Jul-2005), "to encourage and give opportunity to Filipinos to listen to the State of the Nation Address (SONA) of President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and be involved in the affairs of the country".
