Romania January 24 Public Holiday Update

(Posted on Tuesday, November 30, 2010)

Earlier today, the Romanian Senate approved a draft law which would declare January 24, the anniversary of the reunification of Wallachia and Moldavia, as a new annual legal public holiday in Romania.

The draft law was introduced amost 2 years ago (20-Jan-2009), by Romania's Social Democratic Party (PSD) to create a new annual official public holiday, Ziua Micii Uniri, on January 24, the date when Wallachia and Moldavia were reunified in 1859.

The bill received public support last year (25-Jan-2010), from both the President of Romania's Senate, Mircea Geoana, and the President of Romania, Traian Basescu.

Since then, however, the government has cooled to the idea of a new public holiday, due to the current austerity measures and the fact that two years ago, official public holidays were added for the 2 days of Pentecost (18-Mar-2008) and for the Assumption (09-Oct-2008).

In any event, the law now needs approval from the lower house, the Chamber of Deputies, to pass.
