The Deputy Spokesman for the government of Thailand, Watchara Kannika, has announced that the cabinet had decided to extend the 2 days of public holidays, declared last weekend, for yesterday and today, for an additional 3 days, until Friday, May 21, 2010, inclusively, due to the situation of unrest in the capital.
The aforementioned announcement follows last Thursday's declaration (13-May-2010) of an emergency public holiday on Friday, May 14, 2010, and last Sunday's declaration (16-May-2010) of public holidays on Monday and Tuesday, May 17 and 18, 2010. Note that, before that, Thursday, May 13, 2010, was already a public sector holiday in Thailand, due to the annual Royal Ploughing Ceremony public holiday.
As was the case for the May 17 and 18 public holidays, the May 19-21 public holidays will be limited to the city of Bangkok. But, as the city of Bangkok extends beyond the borders of Bangkok province, these additional public holidays will also affect the provinces of Nonthaburi, Samut Prakan, Pathum Thani, Nakhon Pathom and Samut Sakhon.
Finally, no announcement has yet been made, in response to this latest announcement by either Thailand's Stock Exchange or the Thai Bankers' Association, which often do not follow government-declared one-off public holidays (16-May-2010 and 14-Apr-2009). Recall that these 2 bodies had, last weekend, announced that they would be operating on May 17 and 18, 2010.
