The government of Tonga has announced that the recently gazetted "Public Holidays (Amendment) Act 2010" (Act No. 10 of 2010) would take effect immediately, meaning that the date of the upcoming Emancipation Day public holiday will be Monday, June 7, 2010, instead of the previously announced date of Friday, June 4, 2010.
The aforementioned act, "Lao (Fakatonutonu) ki he Ngaahi 'Aho Malolo Faka-Pule'anga 2010" moves the date of some mid-week public holidays to the nearest Monday.
The amendment act was passed by the Tongan Legislative Assembly in April (08-Apr-2010) and was gazetted late last month (19-May-2010). But, until the recent government announcement, it was thought that the change would only be effective beginning in 2011.
