The UK's Prime Minister, David Cameron, has announced that the Cabinet had agreed to declare Friday, April 29, 2011, as a one-off public holiday in the UK.
The announcement, which had been widely expected (18-Nov-2010), was made shortly after the date of Friday, April 29, 2011, was announced as the date of the upcoming wedding of Prince William.
Note that, technically, the Cabinet decision does not apply to Scotland, which has control over its bank holidays and public holidays. However the adoption of an April 29, 2011, public holiday in Scotland is expected to be a mere formality.
A bank holiday (as public holidays are called in the UK) was declared in 1981 on the occasion of the wedding of the Prince of Wales and Lady Diana Spencer. One-off public holidays have also been declared for the Queen's Golden and Diamond jubiees (27-Dec-2009, 19-Jun-2001 and 24-Nov-2000).
