The Uruguayan senator, Ope Pasquet, has tabled a bill that would declare May 25, 2010, a one-off public holiday in Uruguay.
The proposed public holiday, unlikely to be approved, is dubbed as a "holiday to restore harmony between sibling countries" (feriado para reestablecer armonía entre países hermanos) would coincide with Argentina's bicentennial celebrations.
Interestingly enough, while Uruguay is concerned about harmonious relations with Argentina, the situation inside Argentina, concerning the bicentennial, is anything but harmonious. The Argentine federal government and the government of the Argentine Capital Territory (Buenos Aires) are at loggerheads on a wide variety of aspects of the bicentennial celebrations, not least of which is the announcement by Argentina's President, Cristina Fernández de Kirchner, that her government plans to declare Monday, May 24 as an additional bridge public holiday, as the bicentennial date, May 25, falls on a Tuesday (25-Jan-2010).
