Chilean Congress Considers July 4 Holiday

(Posted on Wednesday, November 30, 2011)

Source: Tramitación de proyectos (Congreso Nacional de Chile)

A bill has been introduced in the Chilean lower house of Parliament (Cámara de Diputados) to declare July 4 an annual holiday commemorating the first sitting of Chile's Congress in 1811.

The aforementioned bill (Establece que el 4 de julio es el día del Congreso Nacional), published in the BoletínN° 8065-24, would also move the day of the presidential inauguration from the current date of May 21, to July 4, so as not to be confused with the annual May 21 public holiday.

In all likelihood, and despite the text of the first draft of the bill which states the opposite (Artículo único: Declárase que el día 4 de julio de cada año es el día del Congreso Nacional de Chile, que para todos los efectos será feriado legal), we expect that this new annual holiday on July 4th, if passed, would be a commemorative holiday, rather than an official non-working public holiday throughout Chile.
