The government of Guyana has finally decided to declare a one-off non-working public holiday on Monday, November 28, 2011, the date of the upcoming National and Regional Elections.

The announcement was made earlier this afternoon by the Government Information Agency , following today's Cabinet decision.

Last month (10-Oct-2011), Guyana's President, Bharrat Jagdeo, had announced that Monday, November 28, 2011, would be the date of the upcoming general and regional elections in Guyana, and at the time we had surmised that this date might eventually be declared a one-off non-working public holiday in Guyana.

Then, in the past couple of weeks (23-Nov-2011), pressure started building for Monday, November 28, 2011, to be declared a one-off non-working public holiday, and yesterday, the head of Guyana's Presidential Secretariat, Dr Roger Luncheon told a news conference that Cabinet had been considering a public holiday on election day and that "a decision will more than likely be made by Friday".

The date of the last general election, Monday, August 28, 2006, was also declared a one-off non-working public holiday in Guyana (23-Aug-2006).
