Jordan 2011 Eid al-Adha Public Holidays Announced

(Posted on Wednesday, November 2, 2011)

Jordan's Prime Minister, Awn Khasawneh, has issued a communiqué declaring a period of non-working public holidays from Saturday, November 5, to Friday, November 11, 2011, for all ministries and public institutions, on account of the upcoming Eid al-Adha (Feast of Sacrifice).

The aforementioned represents a 1-day change of the Eid Al-Adha public holidays, as compared to the earlier official government decree (16-Feb-2007), which was meant to lock-in the official public holidays in Jordan, for the period of 2007-2011, although last-minute changes to that forecast have been frequent (19-Nov-2009, 10-Sep-2009 and 15-May-2009).

One interesting aspect of today's communiqué is that it states that the additional Eid al-Adha non-working public holiday on Thursday, November 10, 2011, is to be compensated by Saturday, November 12, 2011, being declared as a regular working day. Although such a shifting of workdays to the weekend is common in Central Asia and in China, it is extremely rare in the Middle East.
